Allusion
A reference to a historical methodical literary work
Analogy
A comparison between two similar things one is usually more familiar than the other
Apostrophe
An address to someone absent often set in commas
Assonance
Like alliteration except the repeating sound across multiple our vowels rather than consonants
Caricature
Exaggerated portrait of a person
Connotation
Associations with the word as opposed to the actual meaning
Denotation
The literal exact meaning of the word
Hyperbole
Intense exaggeration
Irony
The incongruity between what is expected and what occurs
Metaphor
Something using a non-literal sense to represent or describe something else
Oxymoron
And two contradictory items are used together
Parody
A spoof or satirical mimicry
Satire
Witty language often you sarcastically
Thesis
An explicit statement of a passages main point
Understatement
When the writer makes something sound less dire or serious that it is, often unused humorously
Alliteration
When multiple words start with the same consonant
