Accommodation
A process that occurs when people
from different cultures come into contact and accept and
create space for one another. The customs, traditions,
technologies, beliefs and languages of both cultures may
be affected.
Acculturation
Change as a result of contact with other groups at different speeds / the cultural changes that occur when two cultures accommodate or adapt to one another’s worldviews
Assimilation
A process that occurs when the culture of a minority group is absorbed by another culture. The cultural identity of the minority group disappears as its
members take on the identity of the other culture.
Bilingualism
The ability to speak two or more languages
Collective Identity
A shared feeling of belonging to a group, how people define themselves as belonging to a group based on certain qualities like race, ethnicity, culture, gender, religion, etc.
Cultural Revitalization
An effort to restore new life into a culture that has been oppressed
Digital Divide
The gap which separates those with and without access to modernized digital technology (the idea that people without access to the internet are falling behind)
Globalization
A process that is making the world increasingly connected and interdependent
Homogenization
A challenge of globalization that could lead to citizens becoming ‘cookie cutter’ images of each other. When applied to people, it means eliminating cultural differences so that people become more similar (everyone doing the same thing)
Hybridization
The mixing of elements from two or more different things to make something new
Integration
The incorporation of diverse minority groups into mainstream society
Marginalization
The pushing of a group to the ‘margins’ of society, where they hold little social, political or economic power
Media Concentration
The collection of ownership of newspapers and other forms of media in control of a few large corporations
Media Convergence
When media transnationals start to buy up other companies and spread the same message
Metropolis
The capital of a country/region, or a densely populated industrial/money-oriented city
Secularism
The separation of church and state / the complete separation between matters of state and religion
Transnational Corporations
A company that delivers its services in two or more countries
Universalization
the spread of culture, trends, customs and practices around the world
Urbanization
The growth of towns and cities due to migration from rural areas as people seek employment opportunities
Economical Dimension
Importing and exporting of goods and services to other countries
Social Dimension
A group of people who form an ordered community centred on kinship, ideology, religion, language or a particular worldview
Democracy
a government system where power is held by the people under a system of free elections
Individual identity
the traits that make up a person’s sense of identity
Collective identity
the combination of beliefs, values, view of history, and languages of a people
