King Philip II was a devout Catholic .He disliked Elizabeth’s religious settlwment ( 1559) .In the 1570s he was involved in several Catholic plots againat Elizabeth .Although his involvement in these plots were half hearted.

Spain was a great imperial power.In Europe, Philip ruled the Netherlands, Spain and parts of Italy.Also had large empires in North and South America.In 1581, he became King of Portugal.This gave him control of the important Atlantic port of Lisbon, as well as Portugals overseas empire.By the 1570’s England started to have ambitions of ruling an empire of it’s own .They hoped to become an imperial power that can rival Spain

A

England exports to Europe were vital to the economy.Many English goods reached European markete via Dutch ports, especially Antwerp.Because Spain ruled the Netherlands, Philip could limit English access to the vital Dutch ports.
In 1568, Spanish ahips with gold bullion took refuge in England due to bad weather.Elizabeth then seized the gold for herself.This enraged Philip.In response , Philip seized English ships in Antwerp and banned English trade with the Netherlands .This caused hardship for the Wnglish people as it damaged the economy massively

What did Elizabeth encourage privateers to do ?

A

Elizabeth encouraged privateers to illegally trade with Spanish colonies , raid Spanish ships and attack the treasure fleets carrying gold and silver.Because the privateers were independant , Elizabeth could deny any responsibility for their actions .It stopped her getting in conflict with Philip.The privateers shared their profits with Elizabeth
