What does Catholic teaching say that sex should be
Marital, Unitive, Procreative
Why should sex be marital
It unites the couple, deepens the relationship, stops unfaithfulness, sex is a gift from god, it is the ultimate committment
Why should sex be unitive
It deepens the love, makes the couple give themself to eachother
Why should sex be procreative
God creates new life through sex, more intensity in the relationship, stops sex being purely for pleasure
Quote for sex being marital
“Sex outside marriage is a grave sin”
Quotes for sex being unitive
“The two will become one flesh”
Quote for sex being procreative
“Be fruitful and multiply” - Genesis 1:27
Why do Catholics believe sex before marriage is bad
Virginity is a gift in marriage that makes the couple feel more special and loved. It also devalues the act because there is no commitment.
What is cohabitation
A couple living together before marriage
Why do Catholics disapprove of cohabitation
There is no commitment within the sexual union which can create insecurity for the couple and children. It can also lead to a more casual attitude reduce the want for faithfulness.
Factors of Catholic marriage
Sacrament, Permanent, Exclusive, Life-Giving (SPEL)
Catholic marriage vows
To have and to hold from this day forwards: for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part
Why do Catholics disapprove of adultery
It breaks the marriage vows, betrays trust, causes hurt/distress to whole family, can cause a divorce, disobeys the 10 commandments
Catholic teaching on homosexuality
It is not a sin to have homosexual feelings however homosexual sex is considered wrong because it is not procreative
Quotes to go against divorce
“Till death do us part”, “What God joined together let no man separate” - Mark 10:9, “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery” - Matthew 19:9
Catholic view on re-marriage
Catholics cannot re-marry in a Catholic Church (unless the original partner has died or they have an annulment). If a Catholic does re-marry they can’t receive Holy Communion.
Features of a valid Catholic marriage
Must have sex, must be consensual, partners not closely related, five vows must be said, willing to accept children
When can Catholics re-marry
If their partner dies or they get an annulment
Valid factors for an annulment
Forced marry, either never intended to have a child, marriage was not consummated (no sex), one never intended to remain faithful, lies/concealment, incest, one couldn’t give consent
Church of England views on divorce
Divorce is accepted because it is sometimes human nature that vows cannot be kept. Re-marriage is a sign of God’s forgiveness andwillingness to give a new start
How can couples avoid splitting up
Marriage counselling classes, talking to each other
Catholic views on contraception
Artificial contraception is wrong because it contradicts God’s command to ‘be fruitful and multiply’ and contradicts the purpose of sex (to be unitive and to procreate)
Other attitudes towards contraception
Contraception is a responsible way of planning your family. People shouldn’t be forced to have kids they can’t provide and care for. God created sex for uniting couples as well as pro-creating.
What is NFP
Natural Family Planning (having sex when the woman is least fertile). It is allowed by the Catholic Church
