in religion:
sex only within marriage so cohabitation of unmarried couples are frowned upon- islam: quran- whoever seeks beyond marriage are transgressors. christianity: bible-sex is a conjugal (married act) between man and woman. cohabitation + sex

liberals see this as outdated but see marriage as ideal

UK culture:
sex can be done outside of marriage- more contraception and as long as everyone is consenting adults, it’s fine. promiscuity sometimes frowned upon.

cohabitation allowed- see whether people are compatible and allows people to live independently but not on their own

islam: story of Sodom, says men who approach men with desire are transgressing. some say should be re-interpreted and shouldn’t judge others

UK culture: cultural homophobia previously, now not so passages out of date, religions becoming more accepting first same sex marriage in 2014. some people still homophobic

christianity:
anglican have opnely gay clergy and stories of ruth and naomi shows support.
but also called an abomination although the word had different translations in the past.
catcholic chruch says same-sex should not be appproved under any circumstances and encourages people to be celibate.

A

prevents women from becoming pregnant. temp (condoms) or perma (sterilisation). lower risk of sti.

atheist+ humanist allow contraception- chose when to have a family and sexual activity fine for humans

christianity: object: catholic. bible says sex purpose of procreation- contraception stops. **children gift from god **can’t allow contraception. accept: sti prevention. Anglican- family planning, have children when you can afford to. induvidual decision

islam- hadith says contraception is Allah’s will but another hadith says if both partners should agree to use contraception, it is allowed allowed as families can’t afford family. only reversible allowed, not sterilisation.

number of marriages decreasing- more people have kids and cohabit, no marriage, but not same legal rights

divorce more common as people want to be happy, religious people want to avoid divorce

marriage is a sacrement for roman catholic- pope says it is indispensible to society. accept cohabitation. faithfulness in marriage- no adultery 10 commandments. polygamy wrong (although there were church people that were polygamous)

divided over same-sex marriage:
against: bible- marriage is a union between a man and woman and can’t have children goes gainst Jesus comment to be fruitful and multiply earth (IVF + surrogates exists). for: don’t differentiate now. bible also says 2 flesh become 1; can be any gender

ISLAM: divorce accepted but last resort:
reconcilliation important
sharia law allows women to divorce men if both are permitting but men can divorce women by saying i divorce you on 3 separate occasssions
free to re marry after divorce

divorce:
roman catholic; no divorce (as marriage vows are covenant) but marriage can be annulled (void) if couple never had sex or refused to have children
anglican- marriages can fail, so divorce and re marriage permitted. 2 unhappy people
jesus anti divorce ‘let no one separate’

2)allows to educate children on faith (bible bring your children up in the name of the lord).
3)celebrate festivals in family.

1) family teaches us to be kind, considerate
2) strengthen Ummah - brotherhood
3) Qur’an says care for parents and extended family
4) family rituals and bismallah ceremony allows children to be bought up in faith

blended- divorcees remarry
single parent- one parent
extended- grandparents, more common, share burden of house price

1) some views on homosexuals and divorcees make some types of family hard to accept (family is man and woman)
2) many other believe that any family should be accpted in church because belief in God is most important. Pope; make sure divorcees feel welcome in church

islam:
1) some accepting of divorcees, some not
2) some frown upon homosexuals, but also believe that that their personal views shouldn’t impact
3) extended family important- love and support

1) women traditionally get paid less than men
2) solve by equal pay act (1970) and sex discrimination act (1975) and equality act (2010)- means men and women need to get same pay for same task. only discriminate for employment if you need to employ a certain group (male for male actors)
3) some positions female dominated (midwives, nurse) but underrepresented in construction industry and CEOs.
4) women suffer sexual hrassment which is hard to prove- may not be considered for promotion

A

bible unclear:
1) Jesus treats everyone equally- had female friends he tretaed equally
2) Bible says you are all one in christ regardless of gender
3) bible tells wives to submit to husbands
4) views changing. women allowed to be church ministers in protestant denomination like anglicans

muslim:
1)** quran says both have equal obligation to Allah to fast, pray and pilgrimage **
2) men and women equal but diff roles. quran - men provide for family and women responsible for home
3) women can work but some believe that they should only work in female professions like midwives.
4) some believe women should wear modest clothing and cover head, some believe this is oppressive and it should be a choice
