What does the Catholic Church teach that sex should be?
Marital
Unitive
Procreative
What does marital mean? Give a quote about it.
Sex and love is a gift from God
Marriage is the ultimate commitment because vows are made in front of Gos and the community.
The sexual act outside is a grave sin (CCC)
What does unitive mean? Give a quote about it.
Sex unites the couple and deepens their love.
They become closer and more committed.
They totally give themselves to each other.
‘The two shall become one flesh’ (Genesis 2)
What does procreative mean? Give a quote about it.
God creates new life through sex.
There is more intensity in self-giving when open to new life.
‘Be fruitful and increase in number’ (Genesis 1:27-28)
What is Genesis 1:27? What does it mean?
“God created humans in his image, male and female, he created them”
Men and women are equal in God’s eyes.
They complement each other (produce harmony)
What is Mark 10:6-9?
‘God made them male and female,’ as the scripture says. ‘And for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and unite with his wife, and the two will become one. So they are no longer two, but one.
What god has joined, let no man seperate.
Four Catholic teachings on sex before marriage?
Waiting means there is no risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
The gift of virginity makes husband and wife feel special, privileged and loved.
Sex with someone you are not married to trivialises the sexual act.
God gave humans the gift of sex in order to reproduce, so sex should only happen when there is a possibility of new life.
Three contrasting views on sex before marriage?
Everyone has the right to have sex when they are ready.
Sex before marriage is fine as long its within a loving long term relationship (Jesus taught that love is the most important thing)
Premarital sex is common. The Catholic Church should accept modern life.
What is cohabitation?
Living together as a couple without being married
Why is the Catholic Church against cohabitation?
It breaks the sanctity of marriage (lack of commitment)
It can be insecure for the couple because it can reduce the need for the couple to be faithful
If the couple split up it affects the children.
It may reduce the effort to make the relationship last.
What are the six marriage vows?
To have and to hold from this day forward
For better for worse
For richer for poorer
In sickness and in health
To love and to cherish
Until death do us part
What are the seven conditions for a valid Catholic marriage?
Must be consummated (have sex)
Must declare willingness to accept children
Must give consent
The five vows must be said in front of a Catholic Priest
Must not be closely related
Must be free to marry
Must marry of own free will (not forced)
What are acceptabel reasons for an annulment?
One/both was forced to marry
The marriage was not consummated
The couple were closely related
What is divorce?
The legal ending of a marriage
Why does the Catholic Church not recognise divorce?
Because the couple promised that they will be together until death and the priest says what “God has joined together let no man put asunder (separate)” so they can’t split up.
What are the laws around divorce in the Church of England?
Do recognise divorce because human nature means vows cannot be kept sometimes.
Re-marriage is allowed as a sign of God’s forgiveness and willingness to give a new start.
What is adultery?
When a married person has sex with someone who is not their husband or wife.
Why is the Catholic Church against adultery?
Breaks the marriage vows and 10 Commandments
The betrayal causes pain and distress … can cause the partner to feel rejected
It is insecure for children as it can cause the breakup of the marriage
What is the nature of marriage?
Marriage is seen as . . .
• providing the loving relationship and atmosphere through which
children can grow and flourish
• an exclusive union of a man and woman
a sacrament through which God’s love and blessing is given to a couple
• a sign of the love of Christ for the Church.
What are Catholic views on re-marriage?
can happen if the original partner has died
anyone who divorces and remarries cannot receive communion
allowed if the first ‘marriage’ is annulled, so is not classed as remarriage
not allowed to remarry in church if the original spouse is still alive
Jesus taught that a divorcee remarrying commits adultery
4 Catholic Teachings on homosexuality and same sex marriages?
Homosexual acts are not acceptable
Homosexuality in itself is not sinful
Same sex couples are not allowed to marry
Marriage is not sacramentally marital
Marriage is not properly unitive
2 contrasting views on same-sex marriages?

Same-sex marriage was legalised in England and Wales in 2014.
