Relativity Concepts Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is your understanding of proper time?
The “Proper Time” is time measured by a single clock
this will be the one that is moving
A “proper time” interval is always shorter than the same interval measured by (two) clocks in another reference frame
What is your understanding of proper length?
The “Proper length” is measured in the reference frame where object is not moving
What is the relativistic total energy?
Total energy = kinetic energy + “rest mass” energy
γmc^2= (γ-1)mc^2+ mc^2
What are the SR invariants
The space-time interval s^2= c^2 Δt^2 - Δx^2
The quantity (mc^2)^2= γmc^2-(pc)^2
What are Conserved Quantity’s in SR
sum Relativistic momentum γmv
sum Relativistic energy γmc^2
when measured from same inertial frame
what is the kinetic energy?
(γ-1)mc^2
as v slows down gamma approachs 1 as v speeds up gamma
As v→ c then γ→ ∞ i.e. more and more energy required to accelerate an object… to get to c requires an infinite amount of energy
How to add Velocity close to speed of light
add velocity/1+velocitys/c^2
write our equation
