Relevant Shit Flashcards
(25 cards)
Biotic factors are?
relating to or resulting from living organisms
Species Diversity is?
the number of different species present in an ecosystem
Species Richness is?
the number of species within a defined region
From bottom to top what are the trophic levels?
Producers, primart consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers, apex predators
What are the three components of a DNA nucleotide?
Phosphate group
Nitrogenous base (ACTG bases)
Deoxyribose sugar
What is primary succession?
Organisms inhabit a newly formed ecosystem and start from scratch
What is secondary succession?
Recolonisation of a habitat after a major disturbance (forest fire, floods)
Transcription factors regulate?
Phenotypic expression of genes
What is genetic drift?
the change in allele frequency due to chance
What are the 6 Kingdoms?
Plantae
Animalia
Fungi
Protista
Archaebacteria
Monera
What is a karyotype
A karyotype is the number and arrangement of DNA into chromosomes present in the cell.
What is a community?
All the species that occupy a specific place at a given time.
What is an ecosystem?
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Define a Niche:
a species role and position within its environment.
What are producers and consumers?
Producers - autotrophs (self-feeders)
Consumers - heterotrophs (feed on other living organisms)
Define Symbiosis:
Relationship in which two organisms live closely to eachother for an extended period of time. At least one benefits.
Characteristics of r-strategists:
Unstable environments, high growth rate, many offspring, little parental investment, short life spans
Characteristics of K-strategists:
Stable environments, long life span, extensive parental care.
What is DNA
A chain of nucleotides carrying genetic instructions.
What is RNA
A chain of nucleotides carrying instructions for forming a protein in a cell.
What is helicase?
Breaks down hydrogen bons holding two DNA strands together
What are genes?
Regions of DNA that encodes molecules that have a function.
What is DNA Polymerase?
Enzyme responsible for assembling nucleotides to form new copies of DNA.
Diploid defnition:
Cellular condition in which there are two of each type of chromosome present in the nucleus.
