A

co-morbidity is when one patient may present symptoms from more than one mental illness

how do issues occur in co-morbidity?

A

patients with schizophrenia are at an increased risk of developing depression therefore diagnosing a co-morbid patient is trying to find the correct diagnosis e.g does the patient have depression or is that part of their schizophrenia

A

symptom overlap is when two or more illnesses present some of same symptoms e.g avolition overlaps with symptoms of depression such as lack of motivation

A

the DSM and ICD use different criteria to classify the same symptoms meaning the DSM might produce a diagnosis of schizophrenia whereas the ICD diagnosis might be bi-polar disorder based on the same set of symptoms
