Q

“law of life” - Henry Jekyll’s full statement of the case

A

Language/Imagery - emphasised by alliteration, law suggests an unnatural human dictated justice and is juxtaposed by “life”, which refers to the natural flow of existence, this tells us that jekyll believes that the way of life and god do not go to together. It could be considered that jekyll has earned his punishment by trying to change what god has created as true.

Q

“Co heir with Mr hyde to death”

A

Imagery - Bible quote, “co heirs with christ, if indeed we share his sufferings in order we may also share in his glory.” As long as jekyll experiences the same “glories” or freedoms that
he gets to experience as hyde, he will also have to experience suffering as a consequence.

A

Jekyll no longer has control over who he is as the existence of hyde has plagued him - This directly goes against his religion as Hyde as a person is seen as evil and goes against many of the religious beliefs he was brought up with.

Refers to the fall in christianity , known as the original sin, adam and eve gave into their temptations which introduced sin to the world, and destroyed their relationship with god. As hyde falls, he has destroyed all the goodness he had as jekyll.
