Benito Mussolini
Took control of the Italian government in 1922. In 1929 attempted to secure the rights of the church the Lateran Treaty was negotiated with Benito Mussolini
Pius XII
Led the church the the horrors of World War II. Appointed the archbishop for the military. Spoke out against communism and he strongly criticized the Nazis
Pius XI
Issued and encyclical with a direct reference to the Rerum Novarum, it was titled Quadragesimo means “after forty years”. Restated the need to work for a just society.
John XXII
Called for the Second Vatican Council in 1962. He wanted the bishops whomgathered in the council to study the unchanging truths of the catholic church and then go out and communicate those truths in a wy that people understand in the modern world. Wrote important encyclicals in these he spoke about establishing peace, truth, justice, charity, and liberty. The first enciclical was called the Meter et Magistra-Mother and Teacher. The second social justice encylical was called Pacem in Terris-Peace on Earth. This made the church expand her message of social justice and urging peace in a age of weapons of mass destruction. Died on June 3, 1963, Cannonized April 27, 2014.

Appointed archbishop for the military of the US, traveled all over the world to visit military people.

First truly world wide council of the church in 1962.

Elected pope after John the XXII and declared that the Second Vatican Council will continue

Businesses failed, thousands of people lost their jobs, prices plunged, farmers couldn’t sell their crops and lost their farms, people lost their homes, and banks failed and people lost all of their money.

What happened to Catholics living in countries behind the Iron Curtain after WWII?
Catholics were being persecuted, churches and schools were closed, and priests, bishops, and cardinals were convicted of treason and sent to prison. People that proclaimed their Catholic faith were barred from public life, good jobs and good schools.
What are some specific steps the Bishop of the USA took in the 19th century to support Catholic education in America
Every parish should est a Catholic school. Established a nationwide Catholic school system with the goal of having every Catholic child in the US enrolled into a Catholic school. Also gave Catholics the Baltimore Catechism.
