Q

What did the Act of Supremacy do?

A

In 1559, this restored royal supremacy to the CofE, rejecting papal supremacy. The Reformation legislation of Henry VIII’s reign was restored, and the heresy law under Mary was repealed. The Act described the Queen as ‘Supreme Governor’ instead of ‘Supreme Head of the Church’ and an Oath of Supremacy was taken by clergymen and church officials.

Q

What was the Act of Uniformity?

A

In 1559, this specified the use of a single Book of Common Prayer, which was a modified version of the second book that Cranmer had introduced in 1552. Now, variations in Eucharist belief were possible, and the Black Rubric was omitted. It specified that ‘such ornaments of the church and of their ministers thereof’ should be those that were in place during the second year of Edward’s reign, before the passing of the Act of Uniformity in 1549. This sustained the wearing of ‘popish’ vestments.

What were the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion?

A

In 1563 these established the faith and practice of the Church of England, and were broadly supportive of reformed doctrine, though sought to adopt a broad approach to ‘essential’ beliefs.

Q

What was the Vestarian Controversy?

A

Several figures claimed they could not obey the rules of clerical dress laid down in the Act of Uniformity, as this specified the wearing of popish vestments. Archbishop Parker issued the ‘Advertisements’ in March 1566 which required clergy to follow ‘one decent behaviour in their outward apparel’. 37 London clergymen refused to signify their support and were deprived of their posts.

Q

Who failed to bring religious change through Parliament?

A

Peter Turner in 1584 and Anthony Cope in 1587. If enacted, these bills would have replaced the Book of Common Prayer with a new prayer book, stripped of any remaining ‘popish’ elements.

Q

What was the Act to Retain the Queen Majesty’s Subjects in their Due Obedience?

A

It was made treason in 1581 to withdraw subject’s allegiance to the Queen or Church of England. Saying mass was punishable by heavy fine and fine for recusancy at Church was raised to £20 per month. In 1587, this was tightened and any recusant who defaulted on his payment of fines could have two-thirds of his estate seized by the Exchequer.
