What was the messiah?
The messiah was who the Jews of the first century were hoping for.
What was a prophet?
A messenger from god.
What is a miracle?
A miracle is an extraordinary event that goes against nature, cannot be explained by science and that Christians believe is caused by God.
What did the miracles performed by Jesus prove he was to some?
The son of god.
What is a parable?
A simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson that is told by Jesus.
Name 3 examples of those who are blessed in the beatitudes.
Blessed are those who are meek, blessed are those who mourn and blessed are the peacemakers.
What does resurrection mean?
The rising of the dead.
Who was Saint Paul?
Saint Paul was a Roman who was originally called Saul and was blinded by a light from heaven on the road to Damascus.
Name three denominations of the Christian Church.
- The Roman Catholic Church
- The Eastern Orthodox Church
- Protestantism
What is a Buddhist?
A follower of Buddhist teachings.
What is a lay Buddhist?
A follower of Buddhist teachings that leads a non-monastic life.
What is the Sangha?
The worldwide community.
What are bhikkus/bhikkhunis/monks/nuns?
Men and women who follow the Buddhist tradition but live in special Buddhist communities.
Who was Siddhartha Gautama?
The ‘unhappy prince’ who became the Buddha after achieving enlightenment.
What is enlightenment?
Seeing the world how it truly is, not how we want to see it.
What are the anatta, anicca and dukkha?
The 3 universal signs of Being; no soul, impermanence and suffering.
What are the 4 Noble Truths?
They are the four steps to help Buddhists identify problems.
What is the Eightfold Path?
The rules for good living, it provides guidances for making positive decisions.
What is the dhammapadda?
The teachings of the Buddha.
What is re-becoming?
What happens after death, not reincarnation.
What is nirvana?
It can be either achieving Enlightenment in life or ‘annihilation’, not re-becoming and simply ceasing to exist. This is the goal of Buddhists.
What is dukkha?
Suffering.
What are mandalas?
Pictures or sculptures made by Buddhist monks and nuns that are then destroyed. This teaches Buddhists to avoid becoming attached to material things.
