What is religious language?
-Religious language refers to the words, symbols, and expressions used to describe and communicate beliefs about God, the divine, spiritual realities, and metaphysical truths
-It often includes terms that go beyond empirical evidence
What is the problem surrounding religious language ?
-Religious believers make claims that they consider deeply meaningful and important, even though these claims cannot be verified or supported by empirical or scientific evidence.
-The debate over religious language centres on whether such unverifiable statements can still be meaningful, or whether they are just expressions of emotion, symbolism, or faith.
What is non cognitive language ?
-Non-cognitive language refers to language that does not aim to express factual claims that can be proven true or false. Instead, it expresses feelings, emotions, moral attitudes, or symbolic meanings
-e.g “Yay, it’s finally summer!”
This expresses an emotion or feeling. It’s not a factual claim, so it can’t be proven true or false—it just shows how someone feels.
What is cognitive language?
-Cognitive language refers to language that makes factual claims statements that can be known, verified, or falsified as true or false
-e.g. “Water boils at 100°C”»
This is a factual statement that can be tested and proven true or false.
