What is the difference between the terms denture bearing area and denture base?
denture bearing area: the hard supporting tissues that the denture covers
denture base: usually the acrylic part of the denture, that rests on the denture bearing areas
What is the definition of ‘Support’?
The resistance of a denture to vertical displacement/forces that are directed towards the tissues
Define Retention
Retention is the ability of a denture to resist vertical displacement away from the denture bearing areas whilst at rest.
Define Stability
The ability of a denture to resist movement, in any direction, in relation to underlying bone during function
What six factors does retention of a complete denture depend on?
- adhesion between saliva and denture base
- surface area covered by denture base
- adaptation of the denture to underlying tissues
- border seal around edge of denture - suction
- muscular control by tongue and cheek
- gravity for lower
In a denture, which is the main component that provides support?
a) clasps
b) rests
c) saddle
d) major connectors
e) minor connectors
b) rests
What three things does support in a denture provide?
- Reduces movement on loading
- Reduces trauma to tissues
- Improves distribution of loading
True or false;
Any part of the denture which sits on the bearing tissues will provide support
TRUE
Which statement regarding rests in dentures is incorrect?
a) Transmits occlusal forces to teeth along their transverse axes
b) maintains correct occlusal relationship of the denture base to the abutment teeth
c) prevents trauma to gingiva
d) provides some lateral stability
e) prevents food packing between abutment teeth and denture base
a) Transmits occlusal forces to teeth along their transverse axes
Transmits occlusal forces to teeth along their LONGITUDINAL axis
Name four types of rests in a denture
- Occlusal
- Cingulum
- Incisal
- Ring
What are the rationales for Rest seat preparations in abutment teeth for RPDs?
- To provide space between the occlusal surfaces of the upper and lower teeth to allow an adequate thickness of the metal
- Provide more suitably inclined bearing surfaces for rests
- Provide a shape of surface giving a desirable amount of bracing
True or False;
The path along which a RPD is least likely to be displaced is at right angles to the occlusal surfaces of the teeth.
FALSE
The path along which a RPD is MOST likely to be displaced is at right angles to the occlusal surfaces of the teeth.
Which statement concerning denture components is incorrect?
a) Clasp tips undergo elastic deformation as denture is removed
b) Mucosa-Borne dentures refer to denture resting solely on the mucoperiosteum.
c) The main component of a denture that provide support is the rest
d) The reciprocal arm of a clasp stays in contact with the tooth below the survey line
e) the further away an indirect retainer is from the clasp, the more efficient it is
d) The reciprocal arm of a clasp stays in contact with the tooth below the survey line
the reciprocal arm of a clasp is ABOVE the survey line
Which denture types need to have an indirect retention designed into them?
Free end saddle dentures (Kennedy class 1 and 2) and kennedy class 4
