renal physiology lab Flashcards
(22 cards)
KIDNEYS
maintain blood volume, pH, and remove toxins and products of metabolic reactions.
ERYTHROPOIETIN
imports hormones that increase the production of red blood cells in response to oxygen levels.
NEPHRON
functional unit of kidney. Includes: bowmans capsule, proximal convoluted and distal convoluted tubules, loop of Henle (both the descending and ascending), and collecting duct.
BOWMANS CAPSULE
serves to filter, the remaining portion serves to reabsorb components of the filtrate or actively secrete ions/toxins/metabolic byproducts for elimination.
PROXIMAL CONVOLUTED TUBULE:
glucose, amino acids, bicarbonate
LOOP OF HENLE:
descending=H20, ascending=NA+ (sodium)
KIDNEYS USE BOTH WHAT AND WHAT
passive and active transport mechanisms
PASSIVE
reabsorption of H2O and solutes, NO ATP NEEDED
ACTIVE
uses ATP
VASA RECTA
collection of blood vessels that surround the nephron. In order to return fluid and solutes to the circulatory system, they are collected by the vasa recta.
DIURETIC
increase urine volume
ANTIDIURETIC
increase reabsorption of water. LOWER urine volume.
ADH (antidiuretic hormone)
increased reabsorption via aquaporins, primarily in the collecting duct.
ALDOSTERONE
increased reabsorption of Na+(salt) , water follows via osmosis. increasing salt, water will follow the salt, similar to ADH.
ANF (Atrial natriuretic factor )
the hormone responsible for increased excretion of Na+, water follows the solute, increased urine volume
ANF IS A…..diuretic/antidiuretic ?
diuretic
furosemide
prevents reabsorption of solutes, increase urine volume
Why does alcohol inhibit ADH secretion?
It reduces how much ADH you make, so it increases how much urine you produce. The ADH signals your kidneys to hold on to water. By suppressing ADH, alcohol can make the kidneys release more water.
renal carcinoma means
kidney cancer
Diabetes Insipidus
damage to the pituitary gland, dysfunction of ADH
Glucose uses primarily what transport
secondary active transport facilitated diffusion.
Chloride uses ____ _____ along an ____ chemical _____
simple diffusion along an electrochemical gradient
