Renewable / Non Renewable Energy Sources Flashcards
(24 cards)
Renewable
When sources will never run out
No renewable
When sour as will eventually run out
Energy sources
They generate electricity. Sow ting must turn a turbine ( wheel ).
We can use this using diff e.g. Energy resources
Fossil fuels:
Advantage
Advantage:
Can be useful all the time
Releases lots of energy
Fossil fuels:
Disadvantages
Pollutes - releases lots of carbon dioxide
Using it too sparsely
Non renewable
When burnt carbon dioxide is released = global warming
Can cause acid rain
Nuclear fuels
Advantage
Lasts longer that fossil fuels do
No carbon dioxide is produced = no pollution
Cheap electricity
Nuclear disadvantages:
Nuclear waste is radioactive
Accidents that occur can cause cancer
Renewable energy resources
Wind power Solar panel Tidal power Hydro electric Biofuel
How does it turn the turbine
Wind power
Wind turns the turbine
Advantages solar
Houses can supply their own electricity
Disadvantage solar
Expensive
Depends on the sun bing out, not suitable for less sunny countries
Advantages wind
Provides a lot of electricity in windy places
Disadvantage wind
Expensive
Unattractive
Noisy
Wind to work
Advantages tidal
Good for places with coast line
Predictable
Disadvantage tidal
Expensive certain areas Not a continues supply of energy Natural habitats Unattractive
Advantages hydroelectric
Creates water reserves as wells
Disadvantage hydroelectric
Natural habitat destroyed
Flooding in near by areas
Biofuel advantage
Cheap
Always available
Won’t run out if replaced
Takes in CO2 and releases CO2 = carbon neutral - when burnt
Disadvantage biofuel
CO2 causes greenhouse gases
Land could be used for more useful things e.g. Food
How generates electricity solar
Convert sunlight into energy
How generates electricity wind
Wind turns the turbine
How generates electricity tidal
Movement of the tide coming in and out turns the turbine
How generates electricity hydroelectric
Moment of falling water turns turbine
How generates electricity biofuel
The heat water used to burn CO2 the steam turns the turbine
