Renewables Flashcards
(12 cards)
Solar power:
What is the energy source?
The sun.
The sun traps and directs Rays of the sun, water can be heated, stops heat escaping
Hydroelectric:
What is the energy source?
Water power.
Places with high rainfall, fast flossing rivers can be damned to help generate electricity
Waves:
What is the energy source?
There is enough energy in waves around Britain to generate half of the electricity required for the whole country
Advantages of windmills
- High winds in the winter when energy is needed most
* clean
Advantages of solar power
- becoming cheaper
- clean
- readily available in warmer climates
Advantages of hydroelectric power
- endless supply of water
- long plant lifetime
- very low generating costs
- clean and safe
Advantages of wave power
- clean and efficient
* longer waves in the winter when energy is needed the most
Disadvantages of wind mills
- not a constant supply
- competitive with power stations
- 10,000 machines needed to supply 20% of Britain’s electricity
Disadvantages of solar power
- supply not continuous
- large number of panels needed to supply towers
- British climate too variable
Disadvantages of hydroelectric power
- high costs of building scheme
- no use in flat or dry, sunny counties
- effects on the environment
Disadvantages of wave power
- less economic than other sources
- waves aren’t always big enough
- problems with getting energy to share
Windmills:
What is the energy source?
The wind.
Windmills/sails used to pump water and generate electricity
