What does the present simple become in reported speech? (e.g. ‘I like coffee’)
It becomes past simple. → He said (that) he liked coffee.
What does the present continuous become in reported speech? (e.g. ‘She is working’)
It becomes past continuous. → He said (that) she was working.
What does the past simple become in reported speech? (e.g. ‘I saw her’)
It becomes past perfect. → He said (that) he had seen her.
What does ‘will’ become in reported speech? (e.g. ‘I will go’)
It becomes ‘would’. → She said (that) she would go.
Which reporting verb is used when we don’t mention who was spoken to?
‘Said’ is used.
Which reporting verb is used when we say who was spoken to?
‘Told’ is used (e.g. She told me…).
What does ‘now’ become in reported speech?
‘Now’ becomes ‘then’.
What does ‘today’ become in reported speech?
‘Today’ becomes ‘that day’.
How do we report a question in reported speech?
We use ‘asked’ + subject + verb. No question form.
How do we report a command or request in reported speech?
We use ‘told’ or ‘asked’ + to + verb (infinitive).
How do we report a question starting with ‘where’, ‘what’, etc.?
Keep the question word + subject + verb. No question order.
How do we report a yes/no question?
Use ‘if’ or ‘whether’ + subject + verb.
Change to reported speech: ‘She said, I am tired.’
She said (that) she was tired.
Change to reported speech: ‘He said, I saw a movie.’
He said (that) he had seen a movie.
Change to reported speech: ‘She said, I will go.’
She said (that) she would go.
Change to reported speech: ‘He asked, Do you like pizza?’
He asked if I liked pizza.
Change to reported speech: ‘She said, I need help now.’
She said (that) she needed help then.
Change to reported speech: ‘They said, We are leaving tomorrow.’

What does ‘yesterday’ become in reported speech?
‘Yesterday’ becomes ‘the day before’.
