How does Sexism effect underrepresentation?
Women face sexism in the media which makes them reluctant to forward themselves as a candidate. This includes people focusing more on her looks than skill.
How does Racism effect underrepresentation?
White people are historically less likely to vote for ethnic minorities. Prejudice can often put off said minorities from standing.
How does the cost of elections effect underrepresentation?
If you are not naturally rich which is a big must for being able to afford the election candidates have to raise large sums of money which is almost impossible. For example $14 billion was spent in the 2020 elections.
How does the incumbency effect effect underrepresentation?
Once you are elected people are more likely to vote for you because they are used to your leadership which makes it difficult for women and ethnic minorities because historically White men have been candidates.
