A

-The way a place is represented by media influences how we feel about the place

  • Formal: Census, road networks, soil types, any factual info
  • Informal: TV, film, music, art, photography, literature, graffiti, blogs

Informal

A
  • TV and film play major role, Can zoom in on key elements or a wide perspective
  • TV soaps represent places via lives of locals: EastEnders, Coronation street
  • Films rely on their own representation
  • Fictional and real places used, sometimes they are combined
  • Authors show us what they think of a place / what they want us to see: photography, blogs, graffiti

A
  • 1801, England & wales held first census. Completed every 10 years without a break
  • Now includes personal info: date of births, gender, qualifications, religion, ethnicity, health, welfare, housing, employment
  • Basic data is a household: 1 person or a group of people living in the same house
  • Allows gov to plan for spending in sectors: schools, healthcare, services, housing

  • Numerical data is biased and subjective
  • Rural communities possess number of characteristics that distinguish them from urban places: Everyone knows eachother, conservative / traditional, less mobility
