“ making more of a cell or an organism”
Sexual reproduction is a process used by animals to produce offspring ( like children in humans) from gametes (sperm and egg cells).
Sexual reproduction requires one male and female animal.
What happens during sexual reproduction?
During Sexual reproduction, sperm cell nucleus joins with egg cell nucleus to fertilise the egg.
What is a zygote?
The fertilised egg cell is called the zygote and soon the cell will divide and produce more cells.
Embryo?
Once the fertilised egg cell (zygote) divide and produce more cells, up to 2 months, the growing offspring is called an Embryo.
An embryo will grow to about 2cm in length.
Foetus?
From 2 to 9 months, the offspring is referred to as a foetus.
The foetus is recognisable as a human and will grow to an average length of 51 cm before birth.
Once born, the offspring is called a baby.
Female reproductive system
The overall function of the female reproductive system is to produce offspring.
The female reproductive system consists of 5 different organs.
- Vagina
- Cervix ( is a ring of muscle at the entrance to the uterus) - this muscle is contracted so as to hold the foetus in the uterus during pregnancy.
- Uterus ( is an organ made of muscle and epithelial tissue) - the zygote ( fertilised egg) will develop into an embryo and then a foetus inside the Uterus.
- Ovary ( egg cells are produced in and released from the ovaries)
- Oviduct ( the released eggs from the ovaries travel down the oviduct) - the human female reproductive system has 2 ovaries and they to which releases an egg every month.
Male reproductive system
- The overall function of the male reproductive system is to produce and ejaculate sperm.
- Penis, Urethra, Sperm ducts, Glands, Testis - testes(pl.)
Function: - Sperm cells are produced in the testes.
- The sperm cells then travels to the sperm duct where they are mixed with a fluid called Semen that are produced by the glands.
- The semen then travels through the sperm ducts into the Urethra and leaves the Penis.
- average ejaculation consists of around 250 million sperm cells and leaves the penis at the speed of around 30mph
