What is Reproduction
Producing off spring
What is sexual reproduction?
Fertilization of Gamete produced by 2 different sexes
What is the natural method of asexual reproduction (how do they grow)and name some examples
Runners, grow from the plant, eg: grass, strawberries
What is the artificial method of asexual reproduction and name some examples
Cuttings, eg: Mulberry, Pineapple
What are the male parts of the flower
Anther, filament
What are the female parts of the flower
Stigma, style, eggs, ovary
What is Pollination
Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma
What does the Anther do?
Produce pollen
What does the ovary do
Produce eggs
Conditions needed for seed germination
Water to activate enzymes
Oxygen for aerobic respiration
Optimum Temperature for enzymes
What does the stigma do
Part of the flower where the pollen lands and the beginning of the fertilization process
What are 7 secondary sexual characteristics in males
Voice becomes deeper
Wider shoulders and narrower hips
Muscle mass and strength increases
Hair grows in face, armpits and pubic region
Has smelly sweat
Production of sperm
What are 8 sexual characteristics of females
Hair grows longer
Narrower shoulders and wide hips
Hair grows in armpits and in pubic region
Has smelly sweat
Production of egg cells
Menstrual cycle starts
Gain fat
Breasts develop
What are the parts of the male reproductive system
The prostate gland, urethra, testes, penis, sperm duct
What are the parts of the female reproductive system
Ovary, oviduct, vagina, urethra
What is FSH, what secretes it, and what does it stimulate
Follicle-stimulating Hormone, secreted by the pituitary gland, stimulates the development of follicles
What does Follicle secrete
Oestrogen
What happens when follicle grows
Oestrogen concentration rises in the blood
What are the functions of Oestrogen
Repairs uterus lining, stops production of FSH
What does the pituitary gland secrete after egg is matured, what does it cause
LH, causes ovulation, which releases eggs from follicle and ovary
What is the remaining part of follicle after ovulation and what does it secrete
Corpus Luteum, secretes Progesterone
What are the functions of Progesterone
Inhibits LH, maintains uterus lining
What happens when there is no fertilization
Corpus Luteum degenerates, oestrogen and progesterone levels drop.
The uterus lining breaks and leaves the body= period
Inhibition for FSH is removed and the cycle starts again
What are 4 conditions that may change the cycle
Medication/Drugs
Food types
Sleep patterns
Stress
