Reproduction in Plants & Animals Flashcards
(29 cards)
What are the 6 reproductive behaviors?
Courtship Dances
Vocalization
Colorful Plumage
Spawning
Nesting
Herding
In plant reproduction, what does the “Anther” contain?
Sperm Cells
What is a “Courtship Dance”?
A “Courtship Dance” is when two organisms show off their traits to find potential mates.
ex) Male birds often Gyrate their feathers or perform special dances to attract a mate.
What is “Vocalization”?
Vocalization is when animals will make sounds to communicate to others in the area.
ex) birds singing songs or frogs croaking.
What is “Colorful Plumage”?
“Colorful Plumage” is when birds have bright colors and are usually seen in male birds and is used to attract a mate.
ex) Cardinals, Peacocks, Blue Bird.
What is “Spawning”
“Spawning” is the release of eggs by the female into the water while males deposit sperm over the eggs.
ex) Pacific Salmon, Octopus, and Mayflies
What is “Nesting”?
Nests are used to hold & protect the eggs & young until they are ready to leave.
ex) Birds, Snakes, and Crocodiles
What is “Herding”?
The act of herding is to protect their newborn and young.
ex) Elephants, Alpaca, Wild Horse
What does it mean to “Germinate”?
To sprout and grow.
Sexual Reproduction requires?
A male and a female.
Females produce what with their DNA?
Egg Cells.
Males produce what with their DNA?
Sperm Cells.
Egg Cell + Sperm Cell = ?
New Offspring
Define Reproduction
The process by which an organism produces offspring, or young.
What parts of a flower are female?
Stigma, Style, Ovary, Ovule, Pistil
What part of a flower are male?
Stamen, Anther, Filament
What are 4 ways a flower can attract a pollinator?
Bright colors
Scent
Nectar
Shape
What is “Seed dispersal”?
When flowers or plants release their seeds in different ways so they can grow.
What are the different ways of seed dispersal?
Wind
Water
Fruits/Nuts
Pressure/Force
Sticky
What is wind seed dispersal?
When seeds from a plant get carried away in the wind.
What is water seed dispersal?
When plants drop their seeds into a body of water to be carried away.
What is Fruits/Nuts seed dispersal?
A flower’s ovary will ripen in some plants which creates a dry (nut) or fleshy fruit .
Animals eat the fruit or nut which releases the seeds.
What is pressure/Force seed dispersal?
Some plants have seed pods that build up pressure as they dry out. The pressure will then “shoot” the seeds out away from the parent plant.
What is sticky seed dispersal?
plants have evolved to use animals as a method of seed dispersal such as seeds getting caught in an animal’s fur.
