Reproductive System Flashcards
(46 cards)
Ovaries
Store and realise eggs
Fallopian tubes
Carry the egg to the uterus, fertillisation occurs here
Uterus (womb)
Is where fertillisied egg becomes implanted and finds nourishment
Cervix
Leads from the vagina to the uterus
Vagina
Holds the male penis during sexual intercpurse
Testes
Produce sperm
Scrotum
Where the testes are,it is located outside the body to ensure the temperature is lower than body temperature for healthy sperm
Epididymis
Is coiled tube on the outside of each testis that stores sperm and allows them to mature fully
Vas deferens
Brings sperm for the testes to the penis
Seminal vesicles ,prostate gland and Cowper’s
gland produce seminal fluid which mixes with sperm to form semen,it nourishes the sperm and allows them to swim
Penis
Enters the female and ejaculates semen
Puberty
Describes when the body starts becoming sexually mature (reproductive organs develop) it normally happens between the ages 10 and 16
Male puberty
In males, sex hormones (testosterone) are released causing the voice to deepen, hair grows the testes grow bigger and produce sperm
Female puberty
In females when the sex hormones (oestrogen, progesterone) are released breasts develop, and hair begins to grow on the body
The first egg is realest from the ovaries which leads to the first period occurring
Menstrual cycle
Is the repeating series of changes that takes place in the female body to prepare it for pregnancy. It ranges from 21 to 40 days, average 28 days
Ovulation
An egg is released from the ovary an average of every 28 days, approximately day 14 of the cycle
Fertile period
These are the days of the menstrual cycle when woman is most likely to become pregnant.Intercourse 2 or 3 days before, during or after ovulation could lead to fertilisation because sperm cells can survive for this long
Menstruation:
the lining and a small amount of blood pass out through the vagina (day 1-5) this is called a period
Pregnancy
If an egg is fertilised, the menstural cycle is paused during the duration of pregnancy. The first sign of pregnancy is often that menstruation dose not happen
Menopause
Signals the end of a females ability to reproduce and also the end of her menstrual cycle. It happens at ages ages for everyone, typically in the late 40s early 50s
Intercourse
During intercourse the mans penis fills with blood and becomes hard enough to be placed inside the women’s vagina
A mixture of sperm cells and seminal fluid called semen is released into the vagina
The sperm swims up to the uterus and into Fallopian tubes
Fertilisation
If an egg is present in the Fallopian tube, and a couple have sexual intercourse, then one of the sperm cells fuse with it
The nuclei of the sperm and egg fuse together to form a fertilised egg, called a zygote
Implantion
The embryo embeds itself into the uterus wall
Pregnancy
The uterus lining dose not break down so menustration stops during pregnancy .The average length of human pregnancy is 40 weeks
