Required practicals Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
Microscopy- Aim
A
Use a light microscope to investigate a sections of a plant or animal cell
2
Q
Microscopy- Equipment
A
Light microscope, microscope slide, onion, forceps, scalpel, white tile
3
Q
Microscopy- Method
A
- Peel off epidermal layer of onion using a forceps
- Place this on the microscope slide and add a drop of iodine to stain the cells and place a cover slip on top and place on the microscope stage
3.Turn the microscope light on or position mirror so light reflects through the slide - Use the lowest magnification lens and use the focus knob to focus, Increase the magnification and refocus if needed
4
Q
Osmosis- Aim
A
Determine the sugar concentration in potato cells
5
Q
Osmosis- Equipment
A
Potato, measuring cylinder, test tube track
6
Q
Osmosis- Method
A
- Cut equal size cylinders from potato and remove excess water from the surface and weigh it
- Place each test tube with different concentrations of sugar solution, and leave for set time. Water will move in or out the cells due to osmosis.
- Remove cylinders, dab off excess water, reweigh and calculate. %change in mass= Final mass- initial mass/ initial mass x 100
