required practicals Flashcards
how can you make soluble salts
from acids by reacting them w insoluble substances
such as metal, metal oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates
what does the name of the salt vary by
type of acid used
metal in substance
common acids n salt they make
hydrochloric acid
sulfuric acid
nitric acid
metal chlorides
metal sulfates
metal nitrates
what is the extra gas / substance that these acids make
hydrochloric acid
sulfuric acid
nitric acid
metal chloride + hydrogen
metal sulfate + water
metal nitrate + water
when making soluble salts, how do you ensure that all of the acid completely reacts
adding excess copper oxide
or
adding excess metal oxide
why is the mixture filtered once the reaction has completed in making soluble salts
to remove excess copper oxide
or
metal oxide
after filtration, why is the remaining salt solution heated
in making soluble salts
so the water evaporates
and
the pure copper sulfate is left behind
after heating what do you expect to observe as the hot saturated solution begins to cool
formation of blue crystals
why is sulfuric acid heated in step one
to increase the rate of the reaction
how would you know when the copper oxide is in excess in stage 2
it stops disappearing
or
mixture turns cloudy/black
why do crystals form when the hot saturated solution is cooled in step 5
solubility decreases with temperature
crystals are removed by filtration then dried
suggest a suitable method of drying the crystals
kitchen towel
or
leave in warm place
what are the five stages to making soluble salts
- dilute sulphuric acid (over heat)
- add copper oxide until excess and stir (over heat)
- filter mixture
- heat solution nail a hot, saturated solution forms (over heat)
- allow solution to cool so crystals form
