Research Flashcards
(23 cards)
Is an integrated set of principles that explain and predict observed events
Less than fact
Theory
An agreed upon statements about what we observe
Facts
A testable proposition that describes relationship that may exist between events
Hypothesis
Research done natural, real life setting, outside the laboratory
Field research
The study of naturally occuring relationships among variables
Correlational
Study the seek clues to cause and effect relationship by manipulating one or more factors
Experimental research
When 2 variables correlate, any combination of 3 explanations is possible
Correlation and causations
Survey procedure in which every person in the population being studied has an equal chance of inclusion
Random sampling
How closely the sample represents the population under study matters greatly
Unrepresentative sample
Given a representative sample, we must also contend with other source of bias such as the order of the question survey
Order of questiom
Precise wording of the questions may also influence answers
Wording of the questions
The way a question or an issue is posted
Framing
The process of assigning participants to the condition of an experiment such as all person have the same chance of being in a given situation
Random assignment
Experimental factors that researchers manipulate
Independent variables
The outcome or effect that being measured in an experiment
Dependent variable
Repeating a research study, often with different participations in different settings to determing whether the findings could be reproduced
Replication
Degree on which the experiment superficially similar to everyday situation
Mundane realism
Degree to which experiment absorbs and its involves participants
Experimental realism
Are effect by which participants are misinformed or mislead sbout the study
Deception
Cues an experiment that tells participants what behavior is expected
Demand characteristics
An ethical principle requiring the research participants to be told enough enable them to choose whether they wish to participate or not
Informed consent
The post experimental explanation of the study to its participants
Debriefing
