Research Method Flashcards
(28 cards)
What are the stages of a thematic analysis
1 familiarise yourself with the data
2generate initial codes
3 group codes into theme
4 name themes
5review themes
6 produce a final report
What are the stages of a content analysis
1 read the data
2 identify common themes
3 total how many times the themes occur
4count how many times important words occur within the themes
What is a correlation co efficient
-1 strong negative correlation
0 no correlation
+1 strong positive correlation
What are the 3 types of interviews
Structures interviews
Semi structured interviews
Unstructured interviews
What is meant by a structured interview
Has set questions to ask to participant which are planned before the interview
What is meant by a semi structured interview
Has some set questions which are planned before the interview to ask to the participant but also has some questions which can be made up during the interview
Often follow up questions to the set questions
What is meant by an unstructured interview
Has no set questions , all questions which are asked during the interview were made up on the spot
What is a strength of a structured interview
+it is standardised because it has set questions so can be repeated to get more reliable results
What is a weakness of a structured interview
Can not ask follow up questions so may not obtain detailed answers so results will be less valid
What is a strength of a semi structured interview ,
Can make up some questions during the interview so can ask follow up questions to the pre planned questions so answers will be more detailed and therefore more valid
What is a weakness of a semi structured interview
Time consuming because the interviewer has to create a question plan before the interview so may be less likely to be repeated therefore results will be less reliable
What is a strength of an unstructured interview
Questions are made up during interview so is easy to conduct more likely to be repeated so more reliable
What is a weakness of an unstructured interview
Not standardised can’t be repeated so results will be less reliable
What is a field experiment
Done in a real life environment no variables are controlled
What is a lab experiment
Done in an artificial environment with variables controlled by
What is a weakness of a field experiment
Not standardised to can’t be repeated to get more reliable results
Risk of extraneous variables impacting results
What is a strength of a field experiment
High in ecological validity results will be more valid
Reduce demand characteristics
Weakness of a lab experiment
Low ecological validity
Increased chance of demand characteristics in a controlled environment
Strength of a lab experiment
Standardised so can be repeated
Reduces extraneous variables
What is a strength of a questionnaire
Easy to conduct , hand out questions to participants
Standardised so can be repeated
What is a weakness of a questionaire
Chance of social desirability and demand characteristics
What is cross sectional research
Looking at a trait using a range of different ages
Short term study
Aimed to look at a development of trait across time
What is a strength of cross sectional research
Less time consuming , over a short period of time using a range of ages more likely to be repeated so more reliable
What is a weakness of cross sectional research
Chance of participant variable when using different groups of ages
EG cohort effect when something effects a group (covid)
Results will be less valid
