(23 cards)
What are ethics?
Moral guidelines used by psychologists studying human behaviour to protect their participants.
The ethical guidelines are provided by the BPS (British Psychological Society).
What does DCCOWPAD stand for?
Deception, Consent, Confidentiality, Observation, Withdrawal, Protection, Advice, Debrief.
What is deception?
Participants shouldn’t have information withheld from them or falsely given to them.
What is consent?
Participants should be informed about the research and given their permission to participate in it.
What is confidentiality?
Participants have a right to expect that information they provide is treated confidentially.
Give them a number instead of names.
What is observation?
When observing correctly, this should only be done in public places.
What is withdrawal?
Participants can be allowed to drop out when they want.
What is protection?
Participants should be protected from psychological and physical harm.
What is advice?
Participants should be offered advice if needed during or after a study.
What is a debrief?
Participants should always have a debrief after the study has taken place to let them know the full research aim. They may be offered advice within this and given a way to contact the researcher.
What are the four ethical considerations?
Respect, competence, responsibility, integrity.
What ethics are under respect?
Consent, withdrawal, confidentiality. All humans should be respected no matter what.
What ethics are under competence?
Advice. Psychologists must work within their own capabilities.
What ethics are under responsibility?
Protection, debrief. Psychologists must accept appropriate responsibility for what is within their power.
What ethics are under integrity?
Deception, observation. Psychologists should have high standards regarding honesty and fairness.
How to overcome the ethical issue of deception?
A debrief could be given at the end of the research to fully explain the aims of the research.
How to overcome the ethical issue of consent?
Informed consent can be gained at the beginning of the research.
How to overcome the ethical issue of confidentiality?
Use numbers instead of names.
How to overcome the ethical issue of withdrawal?
Let the participants pick their role and don’t force them if they aren’t comfortable.
How to overcome the ethical issue of protection?
