Why are interviews used?
To extent knowledge about ppts thoughts + feelings in relation to behaviours
What types of questions do interviews include?
Open + closed questions
Why are true interviews face to face?
Allows the researcher to collect data on ppts non-verbal behaviour (e.g. body language)
Interviewer will undergo training to ensure they are competent in carrying out interview
What is done to interviews?
Tape recorded or video recorded + verbal content will be transcribed later for analysis
Reduces likelihood of obtaining large samples, transcribing is time cinsuming
What are interview schedules?
Set of prepared questions designed to be asked exactly as worded
Data is written up as transcript
Why are interviews not the best method for researching sensitive topics?
People may be more comfortable completeing a questionnaire in private
What are structured interviews?
Quantitative research method where closed questions are prepared in form of interview schedule, where interviewer reads out exactly whats worded
What is a semi-structured interview?
meeting where interview doesn’t follow a formalised list if questions
Will ask open questions, allowing for discussion, + some questions may be added or missed
What are unstructured interviews?
Dont use set questions, asks open questions + lets interview flow like natural conversation
Inteviewer modifies wuestions to suit candidates specific experiences
Why are unstructured interviews low in reliability?
Can’t remember the prompt questions which the answers were given to, cant produce consistent results
What is a negative of structured interviews?
Can’t follow up on the data given in answers, must move to next question
Interview schedule increases reliability
