Research Psych Exam 1 Flashcards
Chapters 1-4 (23 cards)
Applied Research
- Done with a particular problem in mind
- The researchers conduct their work in a local real-world context
Basic Reserach
The goal is to enhance the general body of knowledge rather than to address a specific, practical problem
Translational Research
The use of lessons from basic research to develop and test applications to health are, psychotherapy, or other forms of treatment and intervention
Theory
A set of statements - as simple as possible - that describes general principles about how variables relate to one another
Hypothesis
- Stated in terms of the study design
- The specific outcome the researcher will observe in a study if the theory is accurate
Abstract
- Summary of the article
- Briefly describes the study’s hypothesis, method, and major results
Introduction
- First section of the regular text
- Explain the topic of the study
Method
- Explains in detail how the researchers conducted the study
Results
Describes the results of the study, including the statistical tests the authors used to analyze the data
Discussion
- Discusses the study’s importance
- May discuss alternative explanations for their data
References
Listing of all the sources the authors cited in writing their article
Construct Validity
How well a conceptual variable is operationalized
External Validity
How well the results of a study generalize to, or represent, people or contacts besides those in the original study
Statistical Validity
The extent to which a study’s statistical conclusions are precise, reasonable, and replicable
Temporal Precendence
The method was designed so that the causal variable clearly comes first in time, before the effect variable
Internal Validity
A study’s ability to eliminate alternative explanations for the association (third-variable)
Belmont Report: Principle of Beneficence
Researchers must take precautions to protect participants form harm and to protect their well-being
Belmont Report: Principle of Respect for Persons
Research participants should be treated as autonomous agents (informed consent) and that certain groups deserve special protection
Belmont Report: Principle of Justice
Calling for a fair balance between the kinds of people who participate in the research and the kinds of people who benefit from the research
APA: Fidelity and Responsibility
- Establish relationships of trust
- Accept responsibility for professional behavior
- (cannot be a therapist to someone you know, cannot have sexual relations with students or clients)
Nickname for APA
Belmont Plus Two
APA: Integrity
- Stive to be accurate, truthful, and honest
- (proffers are obligated to teach accurately, therapists are required to stay current on the empirical evidence for therapeutic techniques)
IRB
Five or more people
