Research Use Flashcards
What is Dubin-Johnson Syndrome? What animal is a model?
Congenital hyperbilirubinemia/hepatic organic anion excretory defect.
Corriedale = Conjugated Dubin-Johnson
What is Gilbert’s Syndrome? Which species is a model?
Congenital hyperbilirubinemia/hepatic organic anion UPTAKE defect
Southdown = (GUS - Gilbert’s Unconjugated Southdown)
What condition do Rambouillet sheep model?
Gamma-glutamyl carboxylase deficiency
What condition do Suffolks model?
Lysosomal storage disease. Lambs present with mild neuro signs. GM1 gangliosidosis.
What condition do Dorsett sheep model?
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. RBC fragile when treated with certain drugs, such as antimalarials.
What is Dubin-Johnson syndrome?
Mutation in MRP2, causing an impaired secretion of conjugated bilirubin into bile. Increase in serum levels of conjugated bilirubin and a black liver, without sequelae.
Describe Gilbert’s Syndrome.
Due to mutation in UGT1A1 gene. Decreased activity of bilirubin uridine disphosphatate glucuronosyltransferase. Can lead to higher levels of unconjugated bilirubin in the blood with tired, weakness, abdominal pain, and slight jaundice often exacerbated by periods of stress. Mild, with most people never having symptoms.
Describe Wilson’s disease.
Autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism leading to accumulation of copper in internal organs, especially liver, cornea, and brain. May result in liver cirrhosis. Kayser-Fleisher ring - Gold brown or green circle of copper in Descemet’s membrane at periphery of cornea. Pretibial (skin) hyperpigmentation, neuro symptoms, blue lunulae.
What type of agent is Jaagsiekte? What does it cause?
Ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma. Betaretrovirus. Contagious tumor of sheep lungs.
Describe the clinical symptoms of OPA.
Tachypneic at rest with abdominal component. Extended head and neck lowered. Cough with clear frothy fluid. May see 50mLs of fluid with wheelbarrow test.
How is OPA transmitted? What is the incubation period?
Predominantly though aerosol, although virus may also be transmitted via colostrum and milk. Incubation period is many months or years, often in 3-4 year old sheep.
What condition do fainting goats model?
Human myotonia congentia (Thomsen’s disease)
What reproductive agent do cattle model?
Tritrhomonas fetus models T. vaginalis
What two conditions are holsteins used to model?
Inherited cardiomyopathies and leucocyte adhesion deficiency syndrome
What cattle breeds are used to model lipofuscinosis?
Aryshires and Friesians
What cattle breeds are used to model glycogenosis?
Shorthorn and Brahman
What cattle breed is used to model hemochromatosis?
Salers
Describe achondroplasia.
Disorder of bone growth that prevents the changing of cartilage, particularly in the long bones of the arms and legs, to bone.
