What are the 2 factors of resistence to SI?
Social support and locus of control.
What is social support?
The perception that a person has assistance available from other people within the group.
What does having social support enable people to be?
- remain independent in situ expected to conform or obey.
- enables individuals to resist pressures to conform because it breaks unamimity of the maj.
In social support what are disobedient peers role?
- disobedient peers act as role models on which a person can base own behaviour e.g. resist order from A figure.
what is Locus of control?
A persons perception of personal control of their own behaviour.
what are the two types of LOC?
Internal and external.
What does it mean if you have a strong internal locus of control?
You believe what happens to them is a result of their own ability and effort rather than influence of others.
Less likely to rely on opinions of others so less vulnerable to SI.
What does it mean if you have a external LOC?
You believe that what happens to you is determined by external factors such as influence of others or luck so less likely to display independent behaviour.

P- A+L believed response position of someone providing social support made diff to effect.
E- Support sig more effective when conf gav correct answer with other conf all giving same wrong answer 1st rather 4th.
L- A correct 1st answer, because it confirms ppts own judgement, produces intial commitment to correct response that endures even though other members disagree.

P- R+W showed social support provided by friends helped adolescents resist conformity pressures from maj.
E- found individuals that had a maj of friends who drank were able to resist pressure to drink when had a friend who resisted.
L- shows that social support offered by non-drinking friends can decrease likelihood of non-drinker deciding to consume alcohol even when faced with drinking maj.
A03-LOC- LOC does not always help us to resist pressure to conform.
Spector (1983)
P- Study of undergrads, found diff in LOC only predicted their ability to resist some types of SI.
E- Found internals more likely to resist NSI than externals but found LOC not appear to be a sig factor in resisting ISI.
L- suggests high degree of internality only helps individuals to resist pressures to conform where main motivation is to gain approval.
A03-LOC-People are more external than used to be and so less able to resist SI.
P- Research found historical trend in LOC, with young people becoming more external
E- Meta analysis found LOC control score of US students had become more external from 1960- 2002.
L-Suggests due to increasing belief among young people that their fata determined by luck and powerful others rather than own actions.
A03-Importance of SS in resisting authority has been demonstrated in RL.
P- Rosenstrausse protest in Nazi controlled berlin was illustration of M research IRL.
E-German women protested, despite threats they would be fired upon, the women refused orders collectively to disperse.
L- This protest mirrors M finding that presence of disobedient peers gives an individual confidence and courage to resist authority’s orders.
