Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What is social support
The presence of people who resist pressures to conform or obey can help others to do the same. Acts as models to show others that resistance to SI is possible.
Social support in conformity
Pressure to conform can be reduced if there are more people present who are not conforming
Social support in obedience
Pressure to obey can be reduced if there is another person who is seen to disobey
What is locus Is locus of control
Julian Rotter (1966) Concept concerned with internal controls versus external control.
- internal- don’t do well it’s because u didn’t work hard enough
- external- out of your control
Continuum
People differ in the way they explain their success and failures but isn’t simply a matter of being internal or external
LOC social influence resistance
People have have an internal LOC are more likely to be able to resist pressures to conform or obey
Research support - resistance to conformity
Research evidence for a role in dissenting peers in resisting conformity.
Resistance is not just motivated by following what someone else says but it enables someone to be free from the pressure of the group
Research support - resistance to obedience
Gamson et al 1982
Higher levels of resistance than in milgrams because they were in groups
88% rebelled
-peer support links to greater resistance
LOC research support
Holland 1967
37% of internals did not continue to max volt
Only 23% of externals did not continue
Increases validity of LOC
LOC evaluation - contradictory research
Twenge et al 2004
US obedience studies over 1960-2002
-people have become more resistant to obedience but also more external
-between internal LOC Increasing resistant behaviour, changing society so things are out of personal control
