Paul Gilbroys study “Aint no black in the union jack” applied to race and ethnicity

A

classic study on contemporary attitudes to race. Accuses politicians all parties and intellectuals of different political persuasion of not taking race seriously.

Outlines race as an agent of historical change alongside class or gender and therefore reinforces the idea that race and ethnic relations habe relative autonomy from purely economic class oppression.
Highlights how those who took part in race riots in the 80's were not just historical agents "in themselves" but were also for themselves ie they were concious of the political statements they were saying.

Argues riots had fostered something live carnival atmosphere where feelings of belonging, freedom and joy were expressed.

writing at a time where he felt that the riots of the 80’s would give rise to urban social movements for social and economic change that would be separate from traditional working class movements for social and economic change that would be separate from traditional working class movmements for social and economic change.
