Strategy to increase water supply
Water Transfer
Desalination
Dams and Reservoirs
Diverting supplies and increase storage
Factors affecting water availability
Climate has a big impact on water. High rainfall means more water.
The global demand for food will increase by 70% by 2050 due to rising population.
Over abstraction has a big impact on water availability. This is when water is pumped out of groundwater supplies.
Global patterns of water surplus and deficit
Most water deficit occurs in deserts such as the Sahara desert.
Most water surplus occurs in the northern hemisphere as there is more rainfall
Reduced domestic supplies of fossil fuels
Between 1990 and 2014, I can see that coal has decreased however, it is still the highest energy producer in the UK.
The changing energy mix
The UK is no longer self sufficient in energy. About 75% of the UK’s known oil and natural gas reserves have been exhausted. By 2020 the UK is likely to import75% of its energy.
How does water transfer work
involves redistributing water from areas of surplus to areas of deficit.
How Does desalination work
taking sea water and removing the salt to produce fresh water.
How do dams and reservoirs work
Dams control water flow in rivers by storing water in reservoirs.
How does diverting supplies and increasing water supplies work
water is artificially diverted and stored for use over a long period of time.
