How is air drawn into the lungs during inspiration (breathing in)?
During inspiration the lungs will inflate. The diaphragm, which is a sheet of muscles at the base of the thorax, will contract causing the ribs to be raised upwards and outwards. The movement in the ribs causes the volume inside the thorax to increase an therefore, the pressure inside the thorax to decrease. Air then floods through the mouth or nose via the trachea, bronchi and bronchioles.
