Respiration Flashcards
(9 cards)
Respiration
The breakdown of food (carbohydrates) to release energy. It is an enzyme-controlled process.
Aerobic respiration
- Is the enzyme-controlled release of energy from food (carbohydrates) using oxygen.
- Occurs in the mitochondrion.
Word equation
Glucose + oxygen ➡️ Energy + water + carbon dioxide
Balanced symbol equation
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ➡️ 6CO2 + 6H2O + 2820kJ
Stage 1
-Glycolysis
-Occur in the cytosol
-Glucose (6-carbon molecule) broken down two three-carbon molecules (pyruvic and pyruvate acid)
Stage 2
-Krebs cycle
-Occur in the mitochondrion
-Two three-carbon molecules broken down to produce water and carbon dioxide.
-Water and CO2 byproducts.
Anaerobic respiration / Fermentation
- It is the controlled release of energy from food in the absence of oxygen.
- Very little energy is produced as the substrate (glucose) is not fully broken down.
- Occurs in the cytosol.
Lactic acid fermentation
In muscle: Glucose ➡️ lactic acid + very little energy
Alcohol fermentation
Glucose ➡️ Alcohol/Ethanol + CO2 + very little energy
