respiration Flashcards
What’s respiration?
Respiration is the process of releasing energy from glucose in every living cell.
What is respiration used for?
This energy is used for movement, growth, and other life processes.
Types of respiration
Aerobic and anaerobic
Difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration (with oxygen)
Anaerobic (without oxygen)
Equation for aerobic respiration
Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy (ATP)
symbol equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O+6O2→6CO2+6H2O+ATP
Where does aerobic respiration take place
Aerobic respiration happens in Mitochondria
what does aerobic respiration do?
Releases a lot of energy
anaerobic respiration equation in humans and animals
Glucose→LacticAcid+Energy
When does anaerobic respiration occur?
happens when muscles don’t get enough oxygen, like during intense exercise.
Anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast
Glucose → Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide + Energy
what does anaerobic respiration cause?
Causes muscle fatigue due to lactic acid build-up.
Pain in muscles
Why is oxygen needed later in anaerobic respiration?
Oxygen is needed later to break down lactic acid (this is called oxygen debt).
Why is Respiration Important?
Energy from respiration is used for:
✔ Movement (muscle contraction)
✔ Keeping warm
✔ Growth and repair
✔ Active transport (moving substances in and out of cells)
