respiration Flashcards
(11 cards)
respiration meaning
respiration is an exothermic reaction because it releases energy
respiration is continuous in all living cells
aerobic respiration process
the sugar glucose reacts with oxygen which produces carbon dioxide and releases energy
why does aerobic respiration use a lot of energy
this is because the glucose has been fully oxidised
when is anaerobic respiration required
during excise a lot of energy is required but oxygen is not always available so anaerobic respiration is used
what happens during anaerobic respiration
in the muscles glucose is converted into lactic acid
does anaerobic respiration require oxygen
no it does not
why does anaerobic respiration release less energy
the oxidation of glucose is incomplete in anaerobic respiration
what happens during exercise
during exercise aerobic respiration increases so more oxygen is required which causes out breathing rate to increase
what happens to our heart during exercise
our heart rate increases to pump more blood and oxygen around the body
what happens during long periods of exercise
anaerobic respiration is required which causes a build up of lactic acid which causes muscles to feel fatigued
what is an oxygen debt
the amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to deal with lactic acid
