Respiration Flashcards
(11 cards)
Give 3 ways organisms use their energy
1) Build larger molecules from smaller ones
2) Muscular contraction
3) Maintaining body temperature
What is cellular respiration?
An exothermic reaction that transfers energy from glucose
What’s the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen ——> Carbon dioxide + water
What’s the symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ——> 6CO2 + 6H2O
Give two reasons why the body doesn’t like anaerobic respiration
1) Only PARTIALLY breaks down glucose, so doesn’t use all possible energy
2) Produces lactic acid which is toxic and painful to the body
What’s the word equation for anaerobic respiration in humans?
Glucose ——> Lactic acid
What’s the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast?
Glucose ——> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast called?
Fermentation
What are two things fermentation can be used for in industry?
1) Adding yeast to bread makes it look fluffy due to pockets of CO2
2) Alcohols
What is oxygen debt?
Amount of oxygen needed to remove lactic acid from cells
What is metabolism?
The sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell or body
