Respiration/Photosynthesis Flashcards
What’s respiration?
Chemical reactions to convert chemical energy into ATP.
Word equation for aerobic respiration:
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + [ATP]
Symbol equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is ATP used for?
- Make new cells and new molecules
- For movement
- To regulate temperature
Where does aerobic respiration occur?
In the mitochondria, in the cell.
What type of reaction is aerobic respiration?
Exothermic reaction
What’s anaerobic respiration?
Same as aerobic respiration, but without oxygen.
When does anaerobic respiration happen?
When not enough oxygen is getting to your cells. (When doing exercise for example)
What disadvantages does anaerobic respiration have?
- Less efficient (more glucose is needed)
- Produces lactic acid (which is poisonous)
- Can cause cramps when lactic acid builds up
Word equation for anaerobic respiration:
glucose -> lactic acid
Why is anaerobic respiration less efficient?
It doesn’t completely break down glucose.
What’s the oxygen debt?
The oxygen needed to break down lactic acid after anaerobic acid.
What can anaerobically respire?
Plants, and some microorganisms.
What is it called when microorganisms anaerobically respire?
Fermentation
Fermentation word equation:
glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
