Carbon dioxide retention / Hypoxic Drive
Chronically high levels of CO2 within body switching desire to breathe to Hypoxic drive
Dyspnea
S.O.B. Or pain during breathing. Symptoms include shallow, rapid breathing and anxiety
Airway infection (upper and lower)
Ie. Croup, RSV, and pneumonia. Symptoms can include wheezing, s.o.b., and cough
Acute pulmonary edema
Rapid onset of fluid in lungs. Symptoms include: sob, pink, frothy sputum, and cough
COPD
Disease and damage of alveoli from smoking.
Asthma / Hay Fever
Chronic condition that increases mucus production, inflammation of airway, and airway constriction.
Anaphylaxis
Severe allergic reaction to allergen that can lead to airway swelling and drop in pressure (shock)
Spontaneous pneumothorax
Rapid onset of air in pleural space due to lung infection, trauma, or unknown reasons
Pleural effusion
Accumulation of fluid within the pleural space of lungs. Due to infection, CHF, and cancer
Pulmonary embolism
Blood clot in pulmonary artery restricting blood flow to lungs
Hyperventilation
Abnormally high respiratory rate
Foreign body aspiration
Inhalation of something into a persons airway
Tracheostomy dysfunction
Complications ie mucus plug blocking airway, bleeding, and dislodgment of tube
Cystic fibrosis
Genetic disorder that affects digestive system and lungs.
