Respiratory Framework Flashcards
What is the definition of breathing
Exchange of gas between an organism and environment
What is Boyle’s Law?
As the volume increases in a container, the pressure goes down;
As the volume decreases, the pressure goes up.
What are the 2 supportive structures for breathing?
Vertebral Column & Ribs / rib cage
How many segments are in the vertebral column?
33 segments
What are the divisions of ribs?
true ribs = 1- 7
false ribs= 8-10
floating ribs= 11&12
What is the spinous process?
Posterior of most of the vertebra
parts that you can touch / feel when you run your hand down the spinal column
What is the transverse process?
Small bony structures on the sides of the vertebra
Site of attachment for muscles & ligaments
Where 2 points meet or forms a joint
What are the 5 divisions of the vertebral column?
Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Coccygeal
How many segments are in each section: Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Coccygeal
Cervical -7 Thoracic -12 Lumbar -5 Sacral -5 fused together Coccygeal - fused to form coccyx (4 parts)
What is the Spinous process?
most touchable part of the spine
posterior
What is the transverse process?
part of the spine on the sides; bone structure
what is the corpus?
most boney part of the vertebra; supports weight
what is the vertebral forearm?
part of the vertebral column where the spinal cord passes through
what is the intervertebral foramina?
part of the vertebral column where the spinal nerves go out of to the rest of the body
What are the superior and inferior articular facets?
the sides of the vertebral column where they meet
What is the atlas?
C1 vertebra; allows for rotation
What is the axis?
C2 vertebra; allows for pivoting
What is the function of the thoracic vertebrae?
This is the basis for the respiratory framework
Supports the back, ribs and cavity to hold heart and lungs
Thoracic vertebra - does what?
Provides the attachment for the ribs
increase in size
T1 - T12
Lumbar Vertebra - how many are there
5
Lumbar vertebra - 2 types of attachment?
provide both direct and indirect attachment to the ribs
Lumbar vertebra - unique qualiities?
largest of the vertebra
holds the most weight
attaches the ribs, abdomen and diaphragm
Sacrum can be described as?
5 fused sacral vertebra
Coccyx is … ?
fused coccygeal vertebra
