Respiratory System Flashcards
(24 cards)
The function of respiratory system
Supplies the body with oxygen and removed carbon dioxide from the body
The respiratory system consists of
Nasal cavity (nose)
Pharynx (throat)
Larynx (voice box)
Trachea
2 bronchi
Bronchioles
Alveoli
Lungs
What does the nasal cavity do?
Where air enters
Nostrils separated into right and left by a midline septum, part cartilage part bone
Function of nasal cavity
Warm, moisten & filter air
Protection
Smell
Pharynx (throat)
3 sections -
Posterior to the nasal and oral cavities
3 sections
Nasopharynx- nasal portion of pharynx
Oropharynx- oral part of the pharynx
Laryngopharynx- laryngeal part of pharynx
The nasopharynx, oropharynx & laryngopharynx has 3 layers of tissue which are ….
Mucous membrane lining
Fibrous tissue
Smooth muscle tissue
Functions of the pharynx (throat)
Passageway for air and food
Taste
Protection
Larynx (voice box)
Lies at root of tongue and extends to trachea
Triangle shape made up of cartilage and muscle
Function of larynx
Sound
Protection
Passageway for air between pharynx & trachea
Trachea
Continuation of larynx
Layers - outer - fibrous and elastic tissue.
Middle - cartilage and smooth muscle
Inner - ciliated columnar epithelium
Function of trachea?
Support
Warming, humidifying & filtering of air
Cough reflex
Two bronchi are formed when trachea divides.
Into right is…and left is…
Right - wider and shorter divides into 3 one to each lobe of the lung
Left - narrower - divides into 2 branches, one to each lobe
M
Bronchi subdivide into what 3 things
Bronchioles
Alveolar ducts
Alveoli
Bronchioles
Small branch of bronchi
Function warming and humidifying
What is Alveoli
Tiny air sacs
The exchange of gases during respiration takes place here
Function of alveoli - external respiration.
This is the exchange of gases by diffusion between the alveoli and the blood
Lungs
2 lungs each side of midline in thoracic cavity
Right divided into 3 lobes
Left divided into 2 lobes to accommodate heart
What is pleura?
Serous membrane which folds back on its self forming two layered membrane within the lungs
Inner and outer pleura is called
Inner visceral pleura
Outer parietal pleura
Pleural cavity ?
Lies between contains serous fluid
What is the adult respiratory rate of breaths per minute?
14-15 breaths
What are intercostal muscles?
Thin sheets of muscle running across the gaps between the ribs
Disorders of the respiratory system
Cold
Bronchitis
Pharyngitis
Laryngitis
External respiration
The way oxygen gets from the lungs into the blood
