Respiratory system Flashcards
(6 cards)
Why does the breathing rate increase before exercise
Anticipatory rise occurs to increase oxygen levels in the muscles before exercise to increase ATP production through the aerobic system
Why does breathing rate and tidal volume increase during exercise
Increased oxygen demand at the muscle so need more oxygen being breathed in
Increased breathing rate
Increased CO2 produced and decreased oxygen levels cause increased diffusion gradient if there is more oxygen in the alveoli. Causes increased diffusion rate of oxygen and CO2
Increase in tidal volume
Increase in breathing rate and depth for increased O2 for working muscles and removal of CO2
Increased Vital capacity
Increase in volume of air that can be breathed in and out. Total lung volume- residual volume. Increased efficiency of oxygen delivery and CO2 removal.
Increased strength of respiratory muscles
Diaphragm and intercostal muscles increase in strength lungs can increase in size to a greater extent
