external is made up of cartilage and skin and lined with mucous membrane
- bony framework is formed of the frontal, nasal, maxillary bones
frontal bone, nasal bone and maxilla bones
cartilaginous framework- lateral nasal cartilages, septal cartilages, alar cartilage
- dense fibrous connective and adipose tissue
internal structures of the nose
3 functions
- filters air
-detects olfactory stimuli
- speech
air enters vestibule = hairs in nostril filter dust = conchae form 3 passages (sa and trap water), air warmed by blood capillaries SNC, mucus from goblet cells trap dust = cilia move mucus to pharynx, spit or swallow
pharynx
passageway for air and food, provides a resonating chamber for speech sounds and houses the tonsils, which participate in immunological reactions against foreign invaders
larynx
