Q

What does the upper respiratory system do?

A

Provide a passageway for air to enter and leave the body.
It also warms and humidifies and cleans the inhaled air and guides it to the lower airway.
The upper air ways consist of the nasal cavities, the pharynx, larynx

Q

What does the Lower Respiratory system do?

A

It extends from just below the vocal cords to the bronchioles
The lower airways are branching hollow passageways that conduct air to and from the alveoli
The lungs are where the gas exchange takes place

Q

What does the pharynx do for the respiratory system?

A

Here the throat divides into the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus (food pipe)
*There is a flap of cartilage called the epiglottis which prevents food from entering the trachea

Q

What is larynx?

A

It is also known as the voice box this is where sound is generated. It also helps protect the trachea by producing a strong cough reflex.

13
Q

What does the trachea do for the respiratory system?

A

This tube carries air from the throat to the lungs. It’s 20-25mm in diameter and it is 10-16cm in length. The inner membrane of the trachea is covered in tiny hairs called cilia. These catch particles of dust that can be removed through coughing.

14
Q

What is aspirate?

A

Food went down the trachea. When food gets in the lungs it can start to grow bacteria. (This is how pneumonia is caused)

15
Q

What helps keep your trachea?

A

*The trachea is surrounded by the 15-20 c shaped rings of cartilage at the front and sides which help keep the trachea open. They are not complete circles to allow the trachea to collapse so there is room for the esophagus to expand.

16
Q

What does the bronchi do for the respiratory system?

A

Trachea divides into 2 tubes. One entering each lung. The left is narrower and longer than the right.

17
Q

What do bronchioles do in the respiratory system?

A

Inside the lungs. They continue to divide and become very narrow less the 1mm wide. These lead to the alveoli

18
Q

What does the alveoli do in the respiratory system?

A

Individual hollow cavities that look like grapes this is where the gas exchange takes place. There are approximately 3 million in an average adult lung. (If they get damaged it takes a very, very long time to grow back) They can be damaged from smoking.

19
Q

What does the Diaphragm do?

A

Muscle that sits under the lungs. As we take a breath in, the diaphragm makes room for the lungs to expand, and when you take a breath out it expands.
