Respiratory System Flashcards
(63 cards)
Inflammation and swelling of the mucous membranes that line the bronchi
bronchitis
chambers of the heart that receive blood from either the lungs or the rest of the body
atria
cartilage ringed tubes that go from the trachea to each lung
bronchi
blood pressure that is consistently higher than normal
hypertension
pathway through which air moves from the pharynx into the chest
trachea
tiny, hairlike structures that line the air passages
cilia
hollow spaces above the nasal cavity
sinuses
chambers of the heart that pump blood either to the lungs or to the rest of the body
ventricles
pieces of cells that start the process of blood clotting
platelets
respiratory disorder in which the air passages become narrower than normal
asthma
large, elastic, spongy organs through which the body absorbs oxygen
lungs
largest artery in the body
aorta
force with which blood pushes against the walls of the blood vessels
blood pressure
buildup of cholesterol and other fatty materials on artery walls
atherosclerosis
main muscle involved in breathing lies just below the lungs
diaphragm
serious infection in which fluids collect in the alveoli
pneumonia
condition in which there are too few red blood cells or too little hemoglobin in the blood
anemia
respiratory infection with symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, sore throat and cough
influenza
smallest blood vessels in the body
capillaries
long-term bacterial disease that affects the lungs and other parts of the body
tuberculosis
name the liquid and solid parts of the blood, and describe the functions of each part.
plasma- (liquid part) moves the blood cells, helps maintain blood pressure, and helps regulate body temperature
Red and white blood cells and platelets- (solid part) carry oxygen to the body parts to the lungs, are antibodies, and help blood clot
Describe three ways you can protect your respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
- not smoke/avoid exposure to secondhand smoking
- get regular exercise
- maintain a healthy weight
How are attires and veins alike? How are they different?
ARTERIES- thick-walled, elastic vessels, carry blood away from the heart
VEINS- large, thin-walled, slightly elastic vessels, carry blood to the heart
BOTH- are blood vessels
what are the two types of chambers in the heart?
Atrium and ventricle
